This is Peter Harrell Jr. with Verbal Defense & Influence and I would like to talk with you today about empathy.
A lot of people use the words sympathy and empathy interchangeably but they actually represent two separate frames of mind. When you experience sympathy, you are simply acknowledging that you feel sorry for a person’s situation. Empathy, however is much more powerful – and useful – because it involves mentally putting yourself into another person’s circumstances to experience it through their eyes.
While it is very powerful, it also can be very difficult to experience true empathy. Play the video below for my suggestion on how to build your capability to enter into this mindset.
Once you have the ability to empathize with someone, you can begin to search for mutually beneficial solutions to any problem.
