Jessica Brogley, Southwest Technical College Communications Instructor

Hello. This is Jessica Brogley. I am a Communications Instructor with Southwest Technical College in Fennimore, Wisconsin. I completed the Instructor Certification class in early June with Gary Klugiewicz as my instructor. I wanted to say a bit about the impact this Verbal Defense and Influence class has had on me.

As our week of training progressed, each night I practiced whatever concepts Gary taught that day. I precisely chose my words when giving the Universal Greeting, and each time I was greeted with a pleasant conversation. At night I recorded practice videos of various tactical communication strategies we were to know, and that gave me greater success the next day. I knew that I was in an emotionally-safe performance-driven classroom, and I grew as a communicator because of that.

That week of learning gave me a great foundation to continue further experiments. Last week I decided to apply the Tactical 8 to 5 Step Tactic with a customer service representative of a multi-billion dollar company. I knew that I had been wronged, and typically I don’t defend myself because it’s just me versus the giants. I planned out my approach and modified it slightly to fit the situation. My goal was to at least get the other person to comply with my fair suggestion. I carefully weaved through the process, and I almost gasped when the representative said, “I see where you’re coming from. I can make this work.”

After studying Communication for many years now, I left pleasantly amused that I found my most solid learning experience with Vistelar and Gary Klugiewicz. What a fortunate discovery for me!
