Effective Communication in the Midst of Stress

877-690-8230

It’s difficult to imagine communicating in a more high stress environment than corrections facilities. Escorting or supervising potentially violent offenders within a confined space can be a powder keg ready to explode.

As a result, there’s a high risk of conflict.

Routine interactions with inmates can cause tempers to flare, and this hazard escalates when corrections officers:

• Respond to violent inmates
• Articulate use of force incidents
• Transport inmates
• Manage use of force
• Supervise and manage personnel
• Deploy non-lethal weapons
• Respond to small and large disturbances
• Conduct force cell moves (Cell Extractions)
• Handle emotionally disturbed inmates
• Handle inmates with special needs

These are just a few of the many situations where COs face conflict and potential violence which, if not handled well, can lead to injury or worse.

Your employees must be able to interact with inmates in a non-escalatory manner, effectively manage situations that get out of hand, and justify their actions – all with the goal of protecting the safety and security of the staff and inmates.

That’s why we developed Verbal Defense & Influence training programs.

Verbal Defense & Influence has been street-tested by police for 28 years, so we understand your specific challenges.

We can help you develop procedures to standardize conflict response, ensure its defensibility, and prepare your COs to handle any situation.

Verbal Defense & Influence trains on how to use some of the most powerful ammunition available: the right words at the right times. This training is not some academic’s pipe dream. It’s realistic and proven control tactics, born of the streets and tested where lives are on the line.
